Thoughts On Love and Entrepreneurship On This Valentine’s Day

by kellyharrington on February 14, 2012

Ahhh – the day of love: Valentine’s Day. I’ll admit it. I’m a sap for Valentine’s Day and the love we celebrate on this day.  The thing about love is that there is this overall consistency and cohesion of love in all parts of our life… but then it does show up differently and in different forms in our partnerships, families, friendships, interests, and, yes, in our businesses.

Whenever someone seeks me out for advice on starting their own business, the first thing I tell them is that you have to love the business part of it.  Most of us start a service-driven business because we love what we do and know we have a gift to share: nutrition, parenting, career, relationships, health, business, and so on.  Yet what I’ve found is that we really only spend 20 – 30% of our time in business doing that ‘thing’ that we set out to do.

So this is where the love comes in.  One of the things that surprised me about running my own service-driven business is how much I love the business part of it: client attraction, marketing, online tools, strategic alliances, learning, growing, and so on.  It is such a challenge that you kind of have to love the business part of it. Otherwise the difficult and frustrating times will break you.  And trust me: There will be frustrating and difficult times (to say it lightly!).

It’s not always roses and chocolates but I do know that my love of entrepreneurship and my love for helping my clients is what carries me through and helps me to keep going.  So, pause today to consider what you love about being an entrepreneur.  And, please, share your thoughts here.
